On March 31st, the sale of the 2016-W $50 Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin began at $1,590. The first coin in this series, released in 2006, was the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coin ever struck by the United States Mint.

The obverse of the 2016 coin features a right-facing profile portrait of a Native American with inscriptions ‘LIBERTY’, ‘2016’, ‘F’ for the artist’s initial, and ‘W’ for West Point Mint in New York.

The reverse features an American Buffalo, standing on a mound along with inscriptions ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’, ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, ‘$50’, and the coin’s composition of ‘1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD’.

The coins are 1.287 inches in diameter, 0.116 inches thick and weigh 1.000 troy ounce each.
